I just felt the need to share with y'all one of the timed writings I did in English this year. |D;; It's kind of scary. A lot of the information is probably wrong, but I only had half an hour to research an write. DDx So I apologize.
(I also lied when I said it was ftw. It sucks pretty badly. :/ I got like, a 'C' on it or something. I don't remember. .__.)

"Gatomon, I Choose You...?"
I have been a videogame and cartoon geek for nearly all of my life. As such, i've grown attached to certain series--for example, 'Digimon' (short for 'Digital Monsters') and 'Pokémon' (short for 'Pocket Monsters', or as the phrase was in Japan, 'Poketto Monstaa'), almost since they were first released. So that would be why I nearly flip my lid each time someone gets the two confused (like when a fake Pokémon is made up on the spot who's name ends in "-mon"), because, believe it or not, the two are really quite different. Digimon and Pokémon are different through their beginnings, creatures, and stories.
Let us start with the very beginning. You know, where things should usually be started. Pokémon and Digimon began somewhat similarly, though Pokémon grew in popularity almost instantly, while Digimon did not. Pokémon began as an actual videogame for the hand-held Nintendo Game Boy in 1996, and both the anime and game were released in America in 1998. this prompted trading card games, merchandise, movies, and arounf thirty-six videogames to date. Digimon was originally a small hand-held game in its own--a Tamagotchi or Gigapets spin-off, if you will--around 1997. Digimon began slowly, but has its own anime (which was released in America in 1999), a few videogames, merchandise... most of the same stuff Pokémon has. For both series, animes and games are still being made. Now that our history lesson is over, what say I share some information on the stories themselves?
First off, let me tell you my biggest pet peeve about Pokémon and Digimon ignoramuses. Only Digimon has monsters whose names end in '-mon'!!! For example, Gatomon, Lunamon, and Agumon. Digimon also features human, animal, and object-like monsters, with no definite genders (one should assume based on the appearance--Angelmon looks male, while is counterpart, Angelwomon, appears female), and Digimon also have the ability to speak. On the other hand, Pokémon has mostly animal or object-like creatures (Pikachu is mouse-like, and Driffloon is balloon-like), all Pokémon-- with the exception of most 'legendary' Pokémon--have definite genders, and most Pokémon don't have the ability to speak anything beyond their name, some exceptions being Mewtwo, Lucario, Slowking, and Team Rocket's Meowth.
As far as stories go, Pokémon and Digimon are very different, sharing only one similarity--Trainers/Tamers. Both series have human main characters that 'own' their own monster and train it, trainers belonging to the Pokémon series, and tamers with Digimon. Pokémon trainers may catch as many Pokémon as they wish, while Digimon typically only have one Digimon. Pokémon follows Ash Ketchum from the very beginning, through fictional regions as he attempts to become the "Pokémon Master" (he's been trying for almost eleven years now, I don't think it will ever happen). While Ash remains the main character throughout the series, his companions vary. The original team consisted of Ash, Brock, and Misty, and began changing as the series progressed. Digimon began with a group of seven "Digidestined", but moved on to new characters almost entirely with the new seasons. A recent season featured Digidestined that did not own Digimon, but could actually transform into Digimon and fight, instead. Digimon is also set in both the real world (mainly Japan), and the "Digital World".
In conclusion, I hope I have not only educated you in the ways of Pokémon and Digimon, but I have also shown you that while, yes, the two share similarities, they are really quite different. Pokémon was, and probably will be, more popular than Digimon for all time, only Digimon have names that end with "-mon", and Ash Ketchum will never be a Digidestined....
or the Pokémon Master, at the rate he's going.
So.... yeah. I apologize for making you read that load of BS. xDD;;
