Joren caught his, and as he started his own meal, Ravyre seated herself against a nearby tree. Maven and Leon did the same, and Feren waited, still standing. When Joren had finished, he turned his attention to him. "Where did you come from? You smell like the ones who ambushed you...but the scent's fading." Joren's eyes narrowed as he looked up at Feren. "I was formerly part of their group." "How do we know that we can trust you?"

Alice came to stand beside Joren, also finished with her rabbit, and frowned at Feren. "We were fighting against them, weren't we?"

"Yes," Feren replied, frowning, then turning back to Joren. "Your scent tells me you were among them for a while...but how am I to know that you won't revert back to your old ways?"

Alice spoke again, her small fists clenching at her sides. She winced at the pain in her injured hand, but then glared back up at Feren. "They practically abducted me, and held me captive under a volcano. They're plotting against the whole population of this land, and were trying to use us in their plans. Joren helped me escape, and had to leave too. They would have killed us if you hadn't shown up. Why in the world would we go back to them?"

"Would you mind explaining to me how we would have known that story?" Feren asked, still remaining calm. "Yet you have to understand that protecting this group-" he paused to motion to Maven, Leon, Demi, Eden, Ravyre, and Nell. "-is one of my top priorities. Can you blame me for being careful?" He glanced at Joren, then back at Alice. "There have been cases when things are set up to make things seem the opposite of what they really are. That's how spies can be convincingly positioned among their enemies." He then fell quiet, thoughtful. "I can't help but try to rely on the belief that what you're saying is true. If that's so, then you could very well be out allies."

Alice looked like she was about to make a sharp reply, but then she relaxed. "I understand your wariness, and respect the caution you use. But please, be assured, we are friends." Her voice was soft and reassuring now, with a firm undertone of truth.

Feren cast another uneasy look at Joren, who met his gaze with an irritated expression. "Feel free to rip me apart and burn the pieces if I'm caught lying," he offered flatly. The lead vampire looked at the other six, then nodded. "Very well. You are both free to stay with us or go. But be warned...if I ever find any reason to believe otherwise, I'll take you up on your word."

Alice kept her expression firm, but inside she was shaken by Joren's words. What would they do if one of them really was hurt or... killed? Her eyes glazed at the thought, her throat choking up.

Joren shrugged, not seeming bothered by the idea of his own future. He knew he wouldn't go back to Jane's band...even if he did, Feren wouldn't have to be concerned with the matter of his death. No, that would be taken care of by Jane, herself, before Feren had the chance to do the honors. He rolled his eyes, figuring that this was probably the best position he could put himself in.

Alice cast a swift glance toward Joren,, trying her best to wipe away all traces of fear from her features. She blinked a few times, knowing she hadn't the least bit of control over her face, and unable to do anything about it.

Joren noticed Alice's gaze, and glanced at her out of the corner of his eyes. What was wrong? Then he was forced to turn his attention back to Feren as the lead vampire spoke again. "Well, will you be staying with us? Or going on your own way?"

Alice's brow crumpled in a slight frown, and she tore her gaze away, looking down at the ground. She only half heard what Feren said, and so she stayed quiet. She would let him make this decision.

Joren frowned. "I think I should talk to Alice about this. Would you excuse us?" He got to his feet, gesturing for Alice to follow him. He didn't wait for Feren's reply as he disappeared into the trees.

Alice looked back to him, but followed willingly, albeit a bit confusedly. When they were far enough away that they couldn't be heard even by the vampires' sensitive hearing, she stopped and stared at Joren, waiting.

"What do you think?" Joren asked her. "Should we stay here or leave?" He paused. "And is something wrong?"
