Sam looked over the fence at the grazing animals. Already five times, she had counted fourteen cows and eight horses. She watched them munch on the green grass for a few more minutes before turning and leaning against a fence post. Slowly, she slid to the ground and took off her bag. She set it on her lap carefully before opening it up to peer at what she had found not too long ago.
Inside was an egg. It was cold ice blue, and the black spots and crack-like lines contrasted against it. She reached down and pulled it out, still noticing the frosty feeling it had on the surface. She moved the bag and set the egg on her lap, her fingers running over the smooth surface.
To someone else, the egg might have seemed slightly ugly. But, to Sam, it was the most beautiful thing she had ever laid eyes upon. She ran her fingers over it for a few more seconds and looked at it more closely.

The egg shivered in her hands, shaking a few tiny particles of ice from it's surface, which drifted down to the earth, melting before they even hit the ground. Then suddenly it grew hot, for the first and probably last time it it's existence, sending white-hot pain searing into Sam's hands as the heat slowly carved a spiral shape into her left palm. Then the egg shuddered again, and just as suddenly another awareness leapt into both creatures' minds. The link strengthened slightly as the being inside the shell probed outward, curious about whoever had picked up it's egg from the crack in the base of a mountain, far to the north.

Sam pulled her hand back in pain and shock of the egg's sudden heat. Peering at her hand, she made out the strange design on it. As she squeezed the place where it was burned, she felt something in her mind. It was like nothing she had ever experienced before. It felt as if there was someone watching her from inside her mind.
Could it be the creature in the egg? Are they trying to find out more about me? She ran her good hand over the egg again. And after a few more minutes of silent wondering, she came up with an idea. Are you the creature inside the egg?

|Are you the one who has found this egg and taken it away for your own entertainment?| countered a stubborn voice. The egg shifted in her hangs again, regaining it's chilled temperature. The ice around it grew thicker, encasing it's shell, but still the mind-link held, barely.

I only did it because no mother was around to keep you warm. But I've long since figured out that this egg apparently doesn't need to be warm. Apparently, you like the cold. She, for one, didn't know if she enjoyed the cold or not. She had never experienced weather cold enough to know. Well, why are you so upset, anyway? You were all aloneat the bottom of that mountain. You must have been lonely.

The egg wiggled in her fingers, pondering her words. |Well I suppose it was getting a bit boring just sitting around,| it replied. |But it wouldn't have hurt to at least ask if I wanted to be moved. I might have been perfectly happy, you never know. Who are you, anyway?|

My name is Samantha, but I'd rather go by Sam. I have no parents, so I was on my own. 'Til I met you, that is. And, I'm sorry for not asking for your permission, but I didn't know that the creature inside the egg was able to speak with me. Not many can, you know. She tried to grip the egg better, but the icy shell had become slippery, so she had to just let it sit in her lap.

The egg snorted indignantly. |Well, just because it's uncommon doesn't mean you shouldn't check,| it grumbled. |But you were lucky this time, I was getting a tad bit bored sitting around there.... So, what do you plan on doing with me?|

I guess I wanted to see what you were, you know, when you hatched. I mean, a lot of creatures lay eggs, so you could be any number of things, couldn't you? But, at least I know one thing about you. You sure like the cold, don't you? She could feel the icy surface on her legs. It was much colder than the warm ground that she was sitting on.

|I see... Well, it's your lucky day, I just might hatch for you... eventually...| The egg shivered, shaking off a few flakes of frost. |Yes. Is that a problem?|

No, actually, it's not a problem. It's kind of nice, I guess. She stood up, still holding the egg, and looked around at the rolling miles of farmland. Then, she spotted a road, the North Road. Now, shall we go somewhere? Say, Dolphin Point? I mean, if you don't want to, we can go somewhere else. The last thing I want is for you to be angry when you hatch. I don't think I want an angry creature that could do any number of things to me that could be fatal.

The egg gave another shake, creating a small snowstorm around it. |How should I care where we go?| it retorted. |And even if I did say what I wanted, I don't get to decide what you dowith me, so why do you even bother asking?| It paused, then added, |But Dragon Point seems a bit warm for a frosty egg like me, don't you think? Use your brain, girl, if you've got one. That's a beach paradise, with tropical islands and all that. The people there wear nothing more than loincloths. How about... Head to the Midnight Mountains, where they actually have snow and such?|

Well, I have always wanted to see more of Tarlonia. I just want you to realize that it's a long way and it will take quite a while to get there. She looked around once and sighed. Then she said, Fine, let's go. There's the the North Road. We'll have to go south on that and go through the Traveler's Meet. Then I guess we'll take the Mountain Path across the Moon River. We amy clip the Dray Forest, but it won't take as long from there. So, let's go. With that, she walked over the wide North Road and began traveling south.
(I posted on the "North Road" board!)
