Jaclyn's eyes flew open, and she stared at the ceiling, chest heaving. For a few moments this was all she could do, but finally she forced herself to sit up and see what time it was. The light outside her window was gray; just before dawn, she'd guess. That was fine, she should get up soon anyway. With a sigh she flopped back down, but refused to close her eyes again and snatch a few more minutes' rest. She was afraid to slip back into those horrible nightmares, where she was lost forever in a vast nothingness. No, she wouldn't even think about it, then perhaps the bad dreams would fade away, and she could concentrate on the present time. With another sigh she dragged herself up again, fumbling around to find some clean clothes. She bundled them up and staggered down the call to the washroom, where she bathed quickly and dressed in a simple outfit that was suitable for battle training. A tight-fitting gray shirt with the sleeves ripped off, and a pair of worn pants that were cut off just below her knees. She tied her hair into a tight bun, using the mirror to make sure it was even, and then slipped on a pair of brown fingerless gloves. Ready for the day, she headed for the kitchen, and saw that Jamison was already there, lighting the fire and putting a kettle on to boil. She plopped down in her normal chair and yawned. Her brother grinned and asked, "Sleep well?" Jaclyn groaned and leaned forward, dropping her arms and head on the table. "It's been a while since I've been up this early," she grumbled, and he just laughed.

"Ah, so you can sense anything on solid ground...including whatever happens to be on it. But you can't sense anything that comes at you through the air. Yet it seems that even though you can perform that ability, you don't know much else about magic, do you?" Jyrra whirled around in her dreams, feeling as helpless as she had outside of them. "Where are you?!" she demanded, the vampire's chilling voice breaking through her sanity. No voice answered. Jyrra stumbled back. The girl finally jolted awake, and instantly staggered out of bed. Though the nightmare, in reality, was over, she couldn't seem to get the vampire's words out of her mind. There's only one way for me to overcome that. she told herself as she made her way out of her room and down the hallway towards the washroom, where she took a quick bath and pulled her damp hair up to keep it off of her neck. Her clothing choice consisted of brown, short pants and a white tank top, which was ideal for what she expected in the process of learning charter magic. Nerves gripped every corner of her mind as she finally joined her siblings in the kitchen right when the sun indicated dawn.

Two pairs of eyes shifted to Jyrra as she came in. "Good morning," Jaclyn murmured, and Jamison added, "Hungry? I'll make breakfast for all of us." Jaclyn pulled out the chair next her, offering Jyrra the seat, and settled back in her own chair as Jamison took out a pair of frying pans and set them on their small cooking stove, lighting the fire beneath it as well.

Jyrra returned the greeting, her voice soft. She approached the chair and sat down, her fingers lightly drumming on the table as she welcomed the warmth of the fire on her skin. "Thanks," she murmured to both of them.

Jaclyn mumbled something that amounted to 'welcome' and was lost in her thoughts once more, gazing unseeingly at the far wall. Jamison fell silent, methodically going about preparing their breakfast. After a few minutes he placed a plate in front of each of them, and plopped down in his own chair, stuffing a piece of bread into his mouth.

Jyrra smiled slightly, though it was slightly forced. "This smells great," she commented, still in a soft tone, as she picked up a fork and started to eat. She was anxious to begin her lesson, and a wave of nerves blocked her other feelings.

Jaclyn jolted out of her daze, and began picking at her food, not really paying attention to what it was she put in her mouth. When the plate was cleared enough to pass as 'empty' she stood, and took care of her dishes, still silent.

Jyrra quickly followed after Jaclyn, scrubbing down her plate and silverware. She winced at the ache in her back, and silently reminded herself that she couldn't push herself too hard...not now. This thought was only met with an argument that had wandered from a part of her mind. But you have to learn this! the voice hissed. It's for your own good, along with Jaclyn's and Jamison's! Her face remained completely blank as she wandered toward the hallway, waiting just outside the door as she waited.

Jaclyn headed out into the hallway as well, and quietly lead the way down the stairs. She started for the back door, stopping to grab a small pouch, which she tied to her belt before stepping out the door. "Ready?" she murmured, turning toward her sister.

Jyrra followed after her, fingers lightly brushing against the walls of the hallway, and then the railing on the stairs. She paused to mentally pull herself together, then inclined her head toward Jaclyn's voice. "Ready."

"Alright. We'll start with some basic strengthening exercises. To get your more accustomed to using larger amounts of magic, and get better at controlling it." Jaclyn moved until she stood directly in front of Jyrra, two feet away. "Now... In your body, there is sort of a... Spring of magic, almost. Like a little reserve of energy that you may call upon at any given time. When you speak, draw, or eventually, when you are experienced enough, just picture in your mind, certain Charter Marks, the magic bubbles up, and you may bend the Marks and the energy into a spell. It takes great concentration and control, and strength, to do this, and it is harder to use some Charter Marks than others. It just takes practice..." She paused, and looked to her sister, for she had closed her eyes as she spoke, focusing on finding the right words to explain. "Are you getting all this?"

Jyrra crossed her arms, staring ahead at nothing as she, in thought, took this in. She listened carefully, making sure she didn't miss an important detail. "Yeah, I think so," she replied, nodding.

"Alright, now, picture this swell of magic. Concentrate on bringing out just a little tiny trickle, and keeping it under control. Breath deeply." She watched her sister carefully, ready to help if it should get out of hand. "Now, picture the Charter Marks for light. Mom and Dad taught us some of the basic ones when we were young, remember? ...Hold out your palm, and send the magic to it. And let the Marks out through your hand."

Jyrra nodded again and, taking slow and steady breaths, closed her eyes. She reached deep into her mind, searching until she found what felt like that little 'spring' of magic. Concentrate. she reminded herself. She took another deep breath and guided it to her outstretched hand. A flicker of light began forming in her palm, growing stronger with the growing amount of magic she applied to it. Too much! Quickly, she drew some of it back in until it felt right. She opened her eyes, unable to see her progress. She waited for Jacyln's consent.

Jaclyn watched the Marks slipping into existence on her sister's palm, and the faint glow that gradually grew stronger around them. "Good," she breathed, smiling. "You're a natural."
