She blinked, leaning forward to stare at the marking on his arm. "Oh," she murmured softly, a slight frown creasing her forehead. "Sounds a lot like the Charter Marks. But... not quite the same. We don't have so much inner power, but more we just have to be strong enough to control the infinite power of the Charter... So they might very well work for me. Or not work on me at all. Who knows." She gave a slight smile, peeking up at him. "I was just going to ask if I could replace the light marks with my own Charter Marks, so I can control them," she added.

Varen's expression changed to a thoughtful look, and he shrugged. "That might be possible...I mean, I don't see the harm in it." He was silent for a moment, glancing over his shoulder. Then, he raised his hand, and muttered something quietly under his breath. The marks slowly faded from the walls, leaving only the dim light of the torches in the room and the marks out in the tunnel, which still found its way through the door. "Alright, go ahead," he said, nodding to her.

Jaclyn smiled back, and was silent for a moment. It took only a few seconds for her to call forth the correct Marks from the ever-flowing stream of Charter that swirled all around them- these were some of the first Marks that she had ever learned, and they came almost too easily now. She breathed out softly, and in the tendrils of air formed several faintly glowing marks. She guided them to the walls, where they slipped into the stone and brightened, dancing about on their own. Soon the room was much brighter, and there wasn't even any need for the torches.

Varen watched, shielding his eyes for a moment at the sudden amount of light. When they adjusted, he looked around with a small grin. "Well, that made this place look....less depressing." He began wrapping the cloth around his arm again, focusing on that task for a moment.

Jaclyn gave a bright smile. "I sort of specialize in making things cheerful."

Varen blinked, looking up after he had tied the cloth into place. "Well, I guess it's up to you what you want to do now. Between orders, we're pretty much left on our own to occupy ourselves. I can answer any questions you have...or try to, at least...or I could leave you to settle in, or whatever."

Jaclyn shrugged, and dropped her pack beside the small bed situated in a corner of the room. "I'm settled." She plopped down on the bed, a thoughtful look on her face. "Can you just tell me more about what you... do here?"

Varen leaned against the wall. "Well, whatever Xoran needs done. We don't really know what he's up to...he only shares those details with the sorcerers that he trusts the most...and they're usually out doing some other missions. For us, it usually has to do with gathering information."

"So this whole collecting up Charter Mages business isn't part of your normally scheduled lives?" she asked, pulling up her legs to tuck them into an indian-style position. her eyes never left his face- she seemed genuinely interested.

"Well, this is the first time we've had Charter Mages around here...but some of our tasks are to go and find out information about certain sorcerers. In the end, we might end up extending the invitation to them to join us if we find that they could be of use." He grimaced, thinking of the unfortunate circumstances under which Jacyln had agreed to come here. Hiram had informed him of the details shortly after he had returned.

She was obviously remembering this as well, for a grimace crossed her face. "I see... So some of your buddies were probably spying on me for a while before they came and 'invited' me?"

"From what I know, they saw some of your lessons with her," he told her. "Obviously, if you were teaching somebody else how to use Charter Magic, you knew what you were doing. There was also talk around Traveler's Meet that you knocked out a vampire with it." He glanced at the Charter Marks on the wall. "Obviously it seemed like a good idea for you to be part of our organization."

Jaclyn's eyes hardened slightly at this, and the glared at the floor. "Good for who?" she muttered, so low that he probably couldn't hear. Forcing herself to speak more normallly, though it was obviously strained, she added, "Where is Jyrra now? Can I see her?"

Varen grimaced at her last remark, knowing that this request would have probably come up sooner or later. He still hadn't thought of a decent way to respond. "I...don't know if that's such a good idea," he responded, crossing his arms and keeping his gaze away from her's.

Her jaw clenched, and she stared daggers at him. She was halfway off the bed, looking as if she were about to lung at him. "Why not?" she snapped, voice dripping with venom. What was with these people? What did they want with Jyrra?
