Jaclyn hesitated, wondering if she really wanted to know what she was about to ask. She decided that she needed to, whether she liked the answer or not. "And what happens to her, in this final level?"

"Once those marks reach her forehead, Xoran will have complete control over her, or, more importantly, her Charter Magic," he said grimly. "Xoran's not a Charter Mage, though he can finally use Charter Magic this way. It only makes him more powerful to use Jyrra, and strengthens the group with you here."

Jaclyn's eyes narrowed. "What, so she's just a tool for him? What about me? Will he stick some disease magic in me, too, and use my magic for what he wants?"

Varen shook his head. "No. You're here like I am...as a sorcerer of the organization. He chose Jyrra because she hasn't yet discovered the extent of her abilities...it was also easier to have her join us. Having Charter Magic avaliable for his use and a Charter Mage among his followers allows him more power beyond his own."

Jaclyn's scowl deepened, and she crossed her arms. "What if she doesn't want to? What if I don't want to? What if we just leave?"

Varen frowned. "Do you really think Jyrra can leave now?" he asked, finally looking at her. "Though you might be able to...you don't even have a mark yet."

Jaclyn stiffened, clenching her fists. "I... couldn't leave without her," she whispered, glaring at the floor.

Varen, meanwhile, was inwardly scolding himself, regretting his decision to show Jacyln. He looked at her, then shook his head, but said nothing. What was he supposed to say?

Her whole body quivered, and she had to work to fight down the overwhelming emotions. Jaclyn let out a slow breath, and looked back up at him. "How can you do this? How could you want to be part of something like this?"

Varen looked away, and when he finally brought himself to look back, his eyes were iced over, angry. "I think it's time I left," he said flatly and, scowling, walked around her towards the door.

Jaclyn's hand flew out, grabbing his arm as he passed. She glared at him, keeping a firm grip on his wrist.

Varen yanked his arm out of her grasp, but stopped, his fist clenching. "What is it?" he muttered, his gaze still fixed ahead of him.

Jaclyn opened her mouth, harsh words lined up on her tongue, but something stopped her. The look on his face, in his eyes, buried way down deep... "I'm sorry," she whispered, hand falling down to her side.

Varen glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, but simply resumed walking, his hands buried in his pockets as he headed down the winding corridors for his own residence. He needed to be alone.

Jaclyn sighed, and raised her head from where it had rested on the small pillow on her bed for the past few hours. Pulling herself up to a sitting position, she glanced around. She'd arranged things a bit more to her liking, and situated the few belongings she'd brought with her. Her clothes she had placed inside the small dresser, where she had also found a dark cloak much like those that all the other sorcerers commonly wore, along with several other items of clothing that seemed like standard uniform for Xoran's followers. She had placed a few books on the shelf below her nightstand, as well as her small enchanted dagger, and arranged the candles she had thought to bring on top of it in an artful formation. A few samples of her jewelry, a small sack of beads and charms, and a few of her tools were on top of the dresser, and her now-empty pack was stowed next to it. After a few minutes she stood and reached for the map Varen had given her, and wandered out into the hall. She stood for a moment, wondering how this door was locked, because she didn't very much want someone coming into her room unannounced. She finally decided to just add one of her own Charter locks on it, since that would probably deter any of the sorcerers here more than their own sort of lock. She concentrated for a few moments, and murmured something under her breath. A few Marks appeared, floating around the seams of the door, and fading to a dull light that only she or another Charter Mage could probably see. Turning away, Jaclyn began to walk aimlessly through the halls, glancing at her map every once in a while to keep track of where she was. After a while she found herself in a long hall lined with doors, one of which was marked on the map with a small red dot. She wondered if maybe this was Varen's room, and decided to check. She found the correct door, and raised her fist giving a light knock before standing back to wait.
