Jaclyn hesitated, glancing at Varen and Rin, and then back to Xoran, doing as he said. Her face hardened to a stone mask once more, all uncertainty disappearing.

Xoran's hand began to glow, and an odd, scarlet stream of fire began to snake around Jacyln's forearm...exactly in the place where Varen's mark and Jyrra's had been. He muttered a series of words under his breath, while his hands moved in complex patterns. This controlled the fire, which was starting to form a symbol on Jacyln's forearm, exactly like the one Varen and Jyrra had. Varen winced and look away. His memories reminded him that this wasn't at all considered a painless process.

Jaclyn cringed away from the fire that slithered toward her, choking down the Charter Marks that came on instinct to stop this, and threatened to break loose. But then, something curious happened. As the flames licks across her skin, all she felt was a soft brush of air. It looked as if her skin were being consumed by the red fire, but she felt no pain. Her eyes widened slightly as she realized it was magic fire, and it had no affect on her, because it was meant to control her inner magic, of which there was hardly any. It was not physically burning her, and it was not tying up her magic, either. Or at least, that's what she thought at first. Probing deeper into her subconscious, she realized that it was taking some affect on her. But the little spring of magic inside her was still much different than what this fire and makr of Xoran's was meant to control. A flood of thoughts swarmed her head in an instant. It wouldn't work on her! Apparently, it had only worked on Jyrra because her inner magic was not as well contained or formed yet, and thus easier to manipulate. But there was still hope! She cast a swift glance at Xoran, and then Varen, and realized that they thought it was working. She would try her best to make them keep believing that, because she knew this was better kept a secret for the time being. Gritting her teeth, Jaclyn tried her best to screw up her face as if she were in great pain. What they probably couldn't tell was that her grimace was actually more of a grin.

The fire finally thinned out, leaving behind the mark on Jacyln's forearm. The glow around Xoran's hands faded, and it was only then that Varen forced himself to draw his attention from the marks on the wall to them. Rin blinked, and Xoran was silent for a few moments more. "You're dismissed, then," he finished with a last glance at Jacyln. Then, his hard glare turned to Varen. "Varen, I want to talk to you. Rin, stay here."

Jaclyn swallowed hard, risking a glance at her arm. Even though she knew it was defective, it still sent a shiver up her spine to think of the damage it was supposed to do- and could have done, if she weren't lucky enough to be different than all the other sorcerers here. She blinked, and glanced at Varen, frowning slightly as she turned to go. She made her way out, and turned down one hall, but paused while still within view of the door, so she could see when Varen came out. She was curious as to what Xoran wanted, and the longer she waited, the more desperately she needed to know.

Varen stepped through the doors minutes later, and waited until they were closed before heading down the same corridor. He didn't acknowledge Jacyln's presence at all, but instead kept his gaze fixed ahead. His face was rather paled, and his eyes were distant, lost in his own realm of thought.

Jaclyn watched Varen pass, and then shook herself out of her stupor and hurried after him. "Hey," she murmured as she caught up, falling into step beside him and casting a sideways glance at him.

"Hey," Varen replied flatly as he continued to walk. He didn't look at her...clearly he was still occupied by his own thoughts.

She snuck another peek at his face, walking a little faster so she could see him better. "Are you okay?" she asked softly.

"Mmm...Depends what you mean by that," Varen said, his expression remaining unreadable, as it normally was.

Jaclyn halted and spun around, planting herself in front of him. "I mean," she began roughly, and then paused to soften her voice and expression. "You obviously aren't okay, so a better question would be, what's wrong with you?"

Varen stopped as Jacyln blocked his path. He considered walking around her, but knew she was stubborn enough to try blocking him again. "Let's just say..." he trailed off. "I shouldn't have told you about Jyrra." Varen hesitated to tell her more, and decided to leave the matter where it was. He wouldn't have been able to bring himself to tell her what he knew.

Her determined expression melted away to worry. "Did... I get you in trouble?" she whispered, biting her lip.

"Yes..." Varen paused. "Yourself and your sister, too."

A frown flashed across her face. "But what did Jyrra do wrong?" she objected, and then added in a whisper, "It was my fault... It's all my fault..."
