She cracked open one eye, half-smiling at his confused actions. "Just make sure no one touches me," she said quietly, and squeezed her eyes shut again.

"Hm," He glanced down at her and nodded once. Glancing back up, he cursed under his breath. Oh, of course you go into the other world or whatever in the middle of the hall, don't you, Masquerade? He thought with a scowl. Well, with luck... neither of them would die.

The mix of soldiers from both armies were still scuffling around behind them, oblivious to the strange blue girl and her bodyguard. But the southerners were now approaching with increasing speed, recognizing Tobias and Masquerade as enemies from the Deathlands. A large brute wielding a broadax charged at Tobias, swinging the weapon above his head.

Tobias' expression set into a grim scowl--these were southerners, so if he was to keep his alignments, he wasn't to hurt them. He stood his ground and brought his claymore up, blocking the ax with difficulty. He grunted and swung his sword upward, knocking the ax away from his face. He then put his sword tip against the ground and used it to thrust himself forwards--driving his boot into the man's stomach.

The man tumbled backward, but two more soldiers leapt at Tobias, waving swords at him. The vampires behind Masquerade had gained the upper hand in their battle, and now turned to the intensifying fight on the balcony. But they seemed a bit confused as to Tobias and Masquerade's alliances, and hesitated before attacking. That one pause was all she needed.
Masquerade unfolded herself and rose to her full height, which was still half a head shorter than anyone else present. However her odd appearance made up for any differences among the troops. In a fluid movement two of the seven bells were removed from her bandolier. She held the third smallest and the second largest bells- Kibeth and Saraneth, the Walker and the Binder. "Cover your ears, Tobias," she murmured, still half in a trance.

He was struggling against the new two, and growled a little. "Hard to do at the moment, Masquerade!" He shouted, rushing forwards and knocking the men away before returning his sword to his back and removing the dagger from his boot. And, manly as ever, he stuck his pinkies in his ears, glancing at her as an 'okay'.

Masquerade swung her arms up and around in a series of arcs and circles, and the bells struck two pure chords. The sound grew, and resonated out through the air, reaching the armies in waves. The fighting slowed and stopped, and the ringing of the bells was the only sound heard throughout the battle-torn city. Everyone was still, but it was obvious to those that tried to break free that the affect was more powerful on the undead creatures. In the back of her mind Masquerade hoped dearly that Tobias had a strong will, for now it would be very easy for any one of them to be thrown into Death without warning. The sound changed, and the ringing of Kibeth became louder and more complicated. The weaker of the vampires were unable to resist it's sweet song, and dropped to the ground where they had been fighting, their spirits carried far into the afterlife by the bell's notes.
Aaron and Jane had, up until this point, been engaged in a tremendous struggle. The splendidly decorated room at the heart of the fortress was in disarray, chandeliers smashed on the stone floor, draperies ripped and furniture overturned. The Guardian was down on her knees, unable to fight the painful intrusion into her mind. She clawed at her head, tears running down her cheeks. Jane grimaced, staring forcefully at her victim. And then the sound of the bells reached them, and the vampire crumpled to the ground beside Aaron. The southern leader let out a cry, partly of relief, and felt her body go numb.

Being so near to the bells, it was only inevitable that Tobias would hear them, even through his blocked ears. He let out a quick breath and panted--he hadn't realized he'd been holding his breath--suddenly getting the feeling of cold water rushing around his ankles, pulling him back... He looked to his feet, no, no, he was still in the land of the living... He shook his head in an attempt to clear it.

Masquerade could see the effects of her bells from the balcony in the mass of troops below. The deep tones of Saraneth grew louder now, and more spirits left their undead bodies, drifting into the cold waters of Death. Masquerade was slightly alarmed by how clearly she could imagine the First Precinct, and she took a more firm grip on herself, knowing that she could loose control now if she were to slip over the edge into Death.

As the ringing sound echoed throughout the passages and reverberated to the lower and upper levels, more and more fell to its melody. On the very first story, Joren and Ravyre froze along with many others, cringing as it rapidly became stronger. Joren clamped his hands over his ears, his eyes wide. He felt as though a force was pulling him slowly but effectively toward the unknown, but more than anything he wanted to resist. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Ravyre in a similar position, though her hands gripping either side of her head as the sound took a stronger mental toll, her face screwed in a silent scream. Joren moved to help--or, rather, he tried. He couldn't move, and he found that he was no longer concerned with what was going on around him, and no longer thinking of the threat of surrounding people. Just that one sound...that was all it took. [/blockquote]

Tobias took a few steps back to Masquerade and leaned against her briefly for support. "Y-you're damn bells are confusing the hell outta me," He mumbled huskily, head hot with sweat and feet cold with the waters of death. Another quick glance down confirmed he was still alive. ... Still alive. He smiled faintly and took hold of a handful of Masquerade's cloak, trying to stay focused.

Now Kibeth's sound was replaced with Ranna, the Sleepbringer. This bell was the smallest, but it's sound was low and sweet, harmonizing in a tragically beautiful song with Saraneth. Those who had not been forced into Death were now lulled to sleep by the necromancer's bells. She let the sounds fade, and placed the bells back in their leather pouches. Once her hands were free, she reached one arm around Tobias, looking just as exhausted by the bells as he was. Ranna's lullabies had not helped, either. She felt as if she could sleep for a month.

He smiled--although faintly--and put his hands on her waist now, resting his forehead against hers. A yawn. "No way it was that easy."

Many more fell, succumbed to either death or sleep. Though he resisted the first melody, the second harmony became a dead weight in Joren's mind. He stayed awake only through the limitations of his kind--limitiations that he was for once grateful to have. Movement, for those alive, was still out of the question.
Throughout the tower, many more were in the same state--either dead, immobolized, or asleep. It was terrifying in it's own sense and yet eerily calming considering that chaos that had ensued only minutes before.
(these bells are confusing mee. xD) [/blockquote]

"Of course not, saving the entire world isn't supposed to be easy." She resisted the urge to yawn as well. "Shall we go see what's left and wake up these sleepy humans?"
