"I suppose." She frowned. "Though it wouldn't be hard for her to catch up. We made it here in two days."

"At least we'd be safe for a little while," Joren answered dully, leaning back on a tree behind him and folding his arms over his chest. "For all they know, we could be out of Tarlonia or on some island. She'd have to bring one of the best trackers in Jane's band to find us, and I don't even know if Jane could spare that right now."

Alice nodded, staring off into space again. She was silent and motionless for a few moments, but after a while she edged her way over to sit next to him. She was hesitant at first, but soon they were side by side, almost touching.

Joren felt heat rise to his face. He didn't know why. He blinked as he continued to watch the trees across from him, then attempted to break through the awkward silence. "So...where do you come from?" he asked randomly.

She blinked, all too aware of the flush that spread across her own cheeks. When he spoke, she blinked, and stared straight ahead, frowning. "I... I don't really... know. It's strange... I can never really remember much about my human life. It was... dark. That's all I know."

"Oh..." Lucky.. Joren thought to himself. Was it really considered luck to forget where you came from? To him, it was. "Well...that's interesting," he replied, a little uncomfortable.

She shrugged. "I guess..." She was quiet for a moment, lost in thought. "I think it was because.... I was strange. A freak. Different. It was a time where magic and special powers were feared and shunned. They, whoever they were, kept me locked up. And then... I don't know how I was changed. It's all... so dark." She gave a small shiver, biting her lip.

Joren nodded. "Yeah...vampire's aren't exactly welcomed in most places," he muttered with a small sigh. His eyes suddenly glazed over as he was reminded of something. Shaking his head, he crossed his arms, inclining his head slightly toward Alice as she shivered. "Hey, it's the past," he assured her calmly. "You don't have to think about those guys anymore."

"Sometimes I don't have a choice about what I want to think about," she muttered bitterly, eyes narrowing.

"I know what you mean," Joren muttered, sighing.

She raised an eyebrow at him. "Do you really?"

Joren silently cursed himself for bringing that up. "Yes," he finally sighed.

Alice snorted. "Right." Her gaze drifted back out to the trees again, looking at nothing in particular.

Joren shrugged. "I never said you had to believe me," he replied simply, gazing up at the sky. "I know what I know."

Alice shrugged. "I'm not really sure what I know these days," she sighed.
