The group landed in a spot far from the lair, covering what would have been several hours of traveling on foot. Orim stopped and glanced around warily before speaking. "We'll stop here for now and go over the plan," he said quietly, dropping his bag and stretching out his stiff limbs. Falvir kneeled beside him, pulling out a map and marking a few routes on it. Varen glanced up at the sky, which was still dark, while Nyra seated herself on a nearby tree stump.

Jaclyn sat near Nyra, folding her legs under her. She stifled a yawn, trying to wake up a bit more.

Nyra watched as Orim looked down at the map, but her attention was only half focused on the marks that were being drawn on it. Something didn't feel right to her...was there something missing? Something wrong? Seconds after these thoughts occured to her, and in a split second, the clearing was surrounded by human-looking figures, their scarlet eyes glinting in the bright moonlight above. A few bared their teeth, and Nyra even noticed that a few of them had black eyes... Her eyes widened, and she instantly got to her feet, her hands alight with a sea-blue glow. "Vampires..." she murmured under her breath, visibly shaking. Falvir and Orim were already in battle-ready stances, and Varen was instantly by Jaclyn's side, scowling and silently cursing their bad luck.

Jaclyn's eyes widened with alarm, and she leaped up, Marks already half-formed on her tongue. Her eyes glinted, narrowing slightly, and a slight smirk curled across her lips. A small figure, at least two heads shorter than any of the others around her, stepped out from between the dozen or so figures that grouped around the sorcerers. Her body was shrouded by dark fabric, and only her eyes were visible from the shadow that covered her face, blazing a bright crimson. "Well, what have we here?" The sharp, high-pitched voice snaked out of the darkness, sending shivers down Jaclyn's back. She kept quiet, however, and waited for one of the other sorcerers to say something, or do something.

One of the vampires stepped forward, his eyes a mix of scarlet and black. "Trespassers, I dare say...Human trespassers. Aren't we lucky..." Orim held up a glowing hand, aiming it at the vampires, his eyes dark and serious. "We are simply passerby. If you grant us passage, then we will leave in peace. We don't want to fight." The vampire raised an eyebrow, his mouth forming a sinister grin. "Why would we just let you all go? That's not very fair when you stumble upon our territory and you don't pay the price." The vampire looked at Jane and back at the group, his eyes narrowing.

Jane raised one hand, a silent order for the vampire to get back in line. She gave him a cold stare, and then looked back to the sorcerers. Her voice became sickeningly sweet. "And what, might I ask, are you doing around these parts? Not many humans can survive up here."

Nyra and Varen remained rooted where they stood, while Falvir and Orim faced Jane from a few feet away. "We come from an area deeper in the Dragonlands," he explained, his voice icy as he didn't relax from his battle-stance. "We're sorcerers...though who we work for and where exactly we reside is our concern alone." Nyra's eyes narrowed, but suddenly she grimaced as a pain shot from her right forearm. She tried to keep a straight face, trying not to draw attention to the spell mark. Especially not now.

Jaclyn cast a glance toward Nyra, concern wavering in her eyes. She didn't have any time to say anything, however. as Jane's voice peeled through the air again, a humorless chuckle. "I see. And what does you master do, hidden up here in such dangerous lands?"

Falvir raised an eyebrow. "And why would that be of any interest to a group of vampires?" he responded. Orim shot him a warning glance, then looked back at Nyra, who was shaking...from fright? He watched as she lowered her arm, grasping her forearm with her left hand. She did it casually, though he didn't want to take any risks. If the spell mark kept acting up, and these vampires caught sight of it, their cover would be blown. Nyra was inwardly cursing all of their bad luck. Vampires...Spell mark. Why in the world is it doing this now, of all times?

Jane's blood-red eyes flickered to Nyra, and narrowed. "What's that on her arm?" she inquired coolly. "Some sort of spell?" In a half-second, she flashed to Nyra's side, grabbing the sorceress's arm and pulling it up to her face for closer examination. A snake-like tongue slid out, drawing in the scent and taste of Nyra's skin. She drew back instantly with a shocked hiss. "It's what controls you, isn't it?"

Nyra winced again as her arm was lifted, but remained frozen in place by shock and fear. Varen's expression was furious as he aimed a glowing hand at Jane, as did Falvir. Orim continued to watch the other vampires to make sure they weren't planning some kind of sudden attack. "How would you know that?" Falvir demanded, carefully watching Nyra and Jane.

Jane smirked at him, showing bright white fangs. "How could I not? I pay attention, and my followers take note when they run into sorcerers with strange marks on their arms. I've seen it before."

Orim's eyes narrowed as he glanced at Jane, noticing the fangs that lay among her teeth. Falvir and Varen remained in their positions, with Varen trying to think of a way for them all to get out of this situation alive. "Is that so?" Falvir spoke, his face set in a scowl. Nyra shivered and closed her eyes tightly as she tried to fight the pain back. It would pass...the sorceress just prayed the pain would hurry up and fade soon so she could think clearly. "Why does that spark any interest to you?"

"Mmm..." Jane's grin widened. "I might be interested in your master's... plans. And he or she might be interested in mine as well. I'd be curious to see if there would be any benefit for either of us if we were to... share knowledge, you might say?"

Orim was quiet for a few moments, his eyes shadowed as he thought this over. "It's not our decision, and we have no right to share that kind of information with random vampires," he muttered. "If you're really so interested, perhaps we can come to some kind of agreement. We'll inform our master of your interest in a possible alliance...just let us go in peace." Some of the vampires around shifted impatiently. This wasn't going the way they had wanted it to.
